Internet and business: numbers and facts you need to know

The Internet has changed our lives in many ways. In particular, it has a huge impact on the business, which we will tell about today.

The number of Internet users in 2014 reached 2.8 billion, which is 39% of the world’s population. 20 years ago, in 1995, this figure was only 0.6% of the population of those times – 35 million users. Since then, the Internet has turned into a full-fledged component of our life. Now the personal computer is not the only source of the Internet, the network is accessible from a variety of mobile devices. By the way, now the number of mobile users has increased from 80 million in 1995 (less than 1% of the population) to 5.2 billion (73%), which is equal to the entire population of the Earth in the mid-1990s. Thanks to this penetration of technology into life, modern business has become impossible without the Internet. Entrepreneurs who do not adopt modern technologies are hopelessly behind.

In this material, based on KPCB data, we will look at the main aspects of online business that are relevant now.

The development of the market of Internet companies
The capitalization of the market of Internet companies in 2015 amounted to 2.4 trillion dollars. 20 years ago, this amount was $ 17 billion.

The picture of market leaders since 1995 has not changed much. Of the 15 top companies – 11 are from the USA. In 1995 there were two more American companies on the list; the other two were from Germany and Canada. By 2015, the picture has changed – in the top 15 4 non-US companies are represented by China.

The increase in the number of advertising on the Internet
Stable growth also shows the advertising market on the Internet, and the percentage of advertising on mobile devices is growing every year.

Optimization of sites for mobile devices
New search algorithm Google, launched in April 2015, indexes only those sites that have a mobile version. The growing number of mobile devices dictates its own terms.

For ease of viewing on small screens of smartphones, developers use various “features”: video for a few seconds, specially adapted advertising, scrolling cards in catalogs, approximation, vertical video.

Cyber attack problem
The threat of attacks hangs over the Internet almost from the day of its birth, and their scale is growing, following the development of the Internet. Statistics gives the following information:

20% of cyber attacks are made directly by members of internal networks that have access to them. The purpose of such attacks is data theft.
Mobile devices are increasingly used for illegal data collection. The number of hacked mobile applications from 2013 to the end of 2014 increased by 136% and reached 410 thousand.
80% of companies do not upgrade computer security systems;
30% of companies have problem areas in the security of cloud storage, personal terminals and data.
Freelance
The emergence of high-speed Internet and mobile devices gave impetus to the development of remote work and freelancing (free recruitment) as well. Experts divide freelancers into the following categories (in brackets – the percentage of the US freelance labor market, according to statistics “Freelancing in America”):
